Although this rarely occurs nowadays because of their seriously depleted stocks, the normally deep-dwelling silver hake often chased baitfish in to shore at dusk or at night.

Being unaccustomed to skinny water, it was not unusual for the hungry hake to run right up onto the sand.

This most frequently occurs during winter, often enough in the old days that it was given the name “frost fishing“.

Sometimes the frost fish were already frozen solid when found, ready for long-term storage.
