The Fishing Advice has been publishing since 2011 — it started as a small fishing blog and has grown into a library of more than 275 in-depth guides. Today the site is owner-operated and independent: no publisher, no content network, no tackle brand behind it.
Behind the site is one person, writing under the pen name The Fisherman. In their own words:
“I’m a private person, so I write under a pen name — but here’s the honest version of who I am. I’ve been studying fishing since 2010: the techniques, the species, the waters, and the why behind what works. I’d call myself a student of the sport rather than a trophy angler. I love fish, I love fishing, and I honestly just love eating fish — which is why you’ll find cleaning, filleting, and fish-care advice here right alongside the tactics. Everything on this site comes from that study: researched, cross-checked against established angling practice, and written the way I’d want it explained to me.”
We’d rather be straight with you than impressive: this is an enthusiast-run site, not a team of professional guides. What we publish is grounded in established angling practice and regional fisheries information, written plainly, and kept current when readers tell us something has changed. We don’t claim credentials we don’t have — and we think that honesty is worth more than a wall of bios.
What This Site Is
The Fishing Advice is an independent, enthusiast-run fishing resource. We publish practical guides on freshwater and saltwater fishing: species tactics, techniques, destination guides (with a deep focus on California lakes and rivers), gear fundamentals, and skills every angler needs — from tying a knot that holds to filleting the day’s catch.
We are not a tackle shop and we don’t sell anything. The site is supported by advertising.
How Our Articles Are Made
Every article starts from established angling knowledge — long-standing technique, published fisheries information, and regional experience — and is written to be genuinely useful to a person standing at the water with a rod in hand. We use modern writing tools, including AI assistance, in our drafting process; every article is planned, structured, fact-checked, and reviewed by a person before it is published. When an article covers safety-sensitive topics like ice fishing or wading below dams, we err on the side of caution and tell you to do the same.
