Lure Retrieve Techniques: Speed, Action, and Depth Control

You can own the sharpest hooks and the best-painted lure in the box and still get outfished by someone with a plain jig. The difference is almost always retrieve. How you move a lure through the water matters more than which lure you tied on. Once you find where the fish are holding, your retrieve decides whether they eat.
Why Retrieve Matters More Than Lure Choice
Three variables control every retrieve: depth, action, and speed. Get the depth wrong and a perfect lure never reaches the fish. Get the action wrong and even a lure at the right depth looks dead. Speed ties both together, since it changes how deep a lure runs and how convincing its wobble or kick looks.
Anglers obsess over color and brand, but a $3 lure fished at the right depth with believable action beats a $20 lure reeled in a flat, mechanical line every time. Line diameter, current, and your reel’s retrieve ratio all shape speed without you touching the handle any differently, so pay attention to gear as much as technique.
Speed Control: The First Variable
Speed changes three things at once: how deep your lure runs, how tight or loose its action looks, and how much time a fish has to react. Slow it down and most lures dive deeper and swim with a wider, more deliberate wobble. Speed it up and they rise toward the surface while tightening their action.
Water temperature and clarity should set your starting speed:
- Cold water (below 55°F): slow way down. Fish metabolism drops, and a fast-moving lure outruns their strike window.
- Warm, clear water: speed up. Aggressive fish in warm water chase readily, and a faster retrieve covers more water per cast.
- Muddy water: slow down and add pauses. Fish need extra time to locate a lure using their lateral line instead of sight.
- Current: let moving water do some of the work. A retrieve that looks slow to you can be fast relative to the current a lure is fighting.
Reel in slack before your lure even starts working. A rod tip held low keeps you tight to the lure, so you can strike back the moment a fish grabs it.
Straight vs Erratic Retrieves
A straight retrieve is the default: cast, engage the reel, wind at a steady pace. It works best on aggressive, actively feeding fish and on lures built to swim true, like spinnerbaits and many minnow-style plugs. Watch a spinnerbait swim past the boat in clear water and you’ll see fish commit almost every time it’s visible.
An erratic retrieve mimics a wounded or fleeing baitfish, and it catches fish a straight retrieve leaves behind. Build one with:
- Jiggles — short wrist twitches that make the lure gyrate in place without much forward progress.
- Short jerks — quick pulls of a few inches that snap the lure sideways.
- Pauses — dead stops of one to several seconds that let a suspicious fish close the distance.
Floating minnow plugs and jerkbaits respond especially well to this pattern. Work the lure in a jerk-pause-jerk rhythm instead of a constant wind, and let it sit dead still after the cast before you move it at all. Many strikes come in that first pause, before you’ve retrieved a single foot.
Stop-and-Go and Jerk Retrieves
Stop-and-go retrieves exploit a simple fact: fish often strike a lure the instant it changes speed or direction, not while it’s cruising steadily. Reel a few turns, stop completely, then resume. The pause lets a buoyant crankbait rise, a suspending jerkbait hang in place, or a sinking lure settle a few inches deeper.
Buoyant crankbaits are built for this. Stop the retrieve and the lure floats upward on its own; resume and it dives again. That rise-and-dive motion triggers reaction strikes from fish holding near cover, especially when you time the pause right next to a stump, dock post, or rock.
A few rules of thumb for stop-and-go work:
- If fish are missing the lure on a straight retrieve, switch to stop-and-go before switching lures.
- Let the pause run longer in cold water; fish need more time to close in.
- Don’t swing at the first bump. Wait until solid weight loads the rod, then drive the hook home.
- If a fish strikes short, stop the lure completely and give it a small twitch instead of continuing the retrieve. A second strike often follows within seconds.
Working a lure right against cover raises strike rates dramatically, since jig-style retrieves built for wood and rock apply the same pause-and-hop logic to a completely different lure type.
Bottom-Bouncing and Vertical Presentations
Bottom-oriented lures — jigs, weighted spoons, drop-shot rigs — need active depth management, because a jig lying still on the bottom rarely gets bit. Two core techniques cover most situations.
Casting and bottom-bouncing: cast out, let the lure sink until the line goes slack, then work it back in short hops. Lift the rod tip a few inches, let the lure fall back on a controlled line, and repeat. Keep contact the entire time; a jig that free-falls on slack line hides strikes because you never feel them.
Vertical jigging: drop the lure straight down under the boat or through the ice, then jig it in place or work it up through the water column a few feet at a time. This works well over schools of suspended fish and on featureless bottom where casting wastes time.
Counting down solves the biggest problem with sinking lures: you can’t see how deep they are. Here’s the method:
- Cast out and start counting the second the lure hits the water.
- Count until the line goes slack, meaning the lure hit bottom. Note that number.
- Divide the water depth by that count to get your sink rate in feet per second.
- On your next cast, count to a fraction of that number to stop the lure at any depth you want.
A lure that takes ten seconds to reach a 20-foot bottom sinks at 2 feet per second. Count to six and you’re sitting at 12 feet, right in the strike zone if that’s where fish are holding.
Matching Retrieve to Water Temperature
Fish metabolism runs on water temperature, and your retrieve speed should track it closely.

Cold water slows a fish’s strike reflex along with its metabolism, so a fast-moving lure simply outruns its target. Warm water flips that: aggressive, actively feeding fish chase and react to speed, and a fast retrieve covers more territory before the bite window closes on a hot afternoon. When temperatures sit in the middle, split the difference and let the fish’s response on a given day fine-tune your pace from there.
Putting It Together on the Water
Retrieve technique isn’t a fixed recipe — it’s a response to what the fish tell you. Start with a straight, moderate retrieve to locate active fish, then adjust one variable at a time: slow down before you speed up, add pauses before you switch lures entirely, and drop deeper before you assume fish aren’t there.
A workable process for any new spot:
- Make a few casts with a straight, moderate retrieve to test aggression.
- If nothing happens, slow down and add pauses before changing lures.
- If fish are following but not striking, add erratic jerks to trigger a reaction bite.
- If fish are missing the lure, switch to stop-and-go and delay your hookset until you feel real weight.
- If nothing works near the surface, count the lure down and work it slower along the bottom.
